  DECORATING WOODEN PHOTO FRAMES

Presented by: Hylan Residence

The consumers at the Hylan Residence had acquired many photographs during the year. They wished to display their photos in a personal frame instead of store brought. The consumers were able to purchase many of the supplies at the local arts and crafts store. Some of the supplies we already had from previous art projects. Since we purchased plain wooden frames, the consumers were able to select the color of the paint or stain. They also were able to personalize the frames with letters and small decorations. The activity was able to be completed in an afternoon, and was great for a rainy day.

SUPPLIES/MATERIALS:
Wooden frames
Paint/Stain
Brushes
Paint holder
Small decorations
Letter rub-ons
Pictures
Glue
Paper to protect surface
Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

Step 1: Before beginning the project gather all your materials and read through the lesson plan. If you have been making craft projects check your supplies before shopping. You may have several items needed such as the paint and brushes. This will save you money and utilize your supplies. After checking for supplies take a trip to the craft store for the remaining items. Go over your list with a friend and determine how much money you need. You can use many items for decorations, so you should select which picture you are going to frame before going to the store. This way you will know what size frame and the theme of decoration. For example, if it is a picture of you at the beach you may wish to purchase small shells to decorate your frame. After you gather all your materials remember to put old paper on your work surface, to protect your surface from the paint and glue. You are now ready to begin your project.

Step 2: First select the color of paint or stain you wish to paint your picture frame. You may wish to stay with the theme of the picture with the selection of paint. For example blue for the ocean scene. Put a small amount of paint into the holder. Place a small amount of paint on your brush and paint the frame. Remember it is best to use a small amount of the brush. Paint the sides and the back also. This will give your frame a finished appearance. If you need two coats of paint let it dry between coats. Let the frame dry for an hour after each coat.

Step 3: After the picture frame dries, place your picture in the frame. Some frames come with backs and some you need to purchase the back separately. You may have to cut the picture to fit into the frame. We suggest you place the frame over the picture so you know where you want to cut the picture to fit the frame. You may also have to glue your picture and the back onto the frame. All frames are different so you may wish to bring your picture to the store so you can be sure to purchase the proper sized frame. After the picture is secured in your frame it is time to put the finishing touch on your picture frame.

Step 4: If you wish to personalize the frame with letters it is best to do this first. There are rub-on letters in a variety of sizes and colors. Place the desired letter on the frame and rub the transfer to the frame. Repeat this until the word is complete. Afterward you can place your decorations around the frame. Do not glue them in place until you are satisfied with the design. After gluing the items to the picture frame allow them to dry overnight.

Helpful Hints: This is fun project you that can personalize for yourself or make as a gift. Giving a friend a picture of the two of you together at a party is a great gift. You can write FRIENDS on the frame and decorate it with bright small flowers or happy faces. Or during the winter holidays have someone take a picture of you outside in the snow or in front of your holiday decorations. Then write GREETINGS on the frame and decorate it with miniature snowman or holly leaves. Maybe you can begin a new hobby of taking pictures and then giving them as gifts all year round!
