SEPTEMBER

“WOVEN ART”
—presented by ETA Day Habilitation

INTRODUCTION
This activity uses a loom to create artwork. Yarn and yarn needle can be purchased in a craft store. In lieu of a needle, one can tape the yarn to a popsicle stick. To make a “nature” weave, articles such as shells, feathers, twigs are easily found on trips to the park or beach. It is a fun activity that helps improve fine motor dexterity/eye coordination.

SUPPLIES/MATERIALS:
cardboard (3”x6” for bookmark, 9”x12” hanging or potholder) notches made top & bottom 1” to 1 1/2” apart;

scissors
twine etc.
yarn needle or popsicle stick
raffia, dried flowers, scissors, shells, twigs, leaves, etc.;
ruler
yarn of varied colors.

STEPS/DIRECTIONS:

Pre-cut yarn or twine in desired lengths, set aside.

Prepare loom by cutting vertical notches 1”–1 1/2” apart

To “warp” or set up loom, start at the top of the first notch and wrap yarn by bringing it down to the opposite notch at the bottom.

Continue wrapping from top to bottom and tape end to the back of the loom.

Begin weaving left to right under and over. If you wish to change color, finish yarn by clipping it through the back of piece.

Overlap new color where you stopped last one.

Once the weave is complete, trim ends and tie off or carefully slip twig under top as you remove it from cardboard.

Ends can be left long and objects (feather & shells can be added).

This activity can be adapted in many ways. One can use seasonal colors and various types of materials. It allows for much self-expression. Other materials, ribbons, braiding, twine can be used; the weave can be open or closed. It is a unique handmade craft that you can use to decorate your own home or give as a gift.
