“GAME NIGHT”

This Month’s Activity is presented by the Hylan Residence.

Residents at the Hylan home look forward to spending their Friday evenings together playing a variety of board games. Over the pasts few months they have purchased several new games that have provided hours of fun for everyone. Starting a family game night at your home can become an enjoyable evening for all.

Before beginning review all steps of the lesson plan.

Materials:

UNO Game
Snacks

Step 1: Select a game that is appropriate for everyone interested in playing. Take a trip to the local toy store or department store. Board games usually cost about twenty dollars. There are a variety of games for everyone. Keep in mind everyone who is going to play the game. If the game is too difficult it will only cause frustration. Remember the evening is designed to encourage communication and generally a good time.

Step 2: UNO is a favorite among the residence at the Hylan home. After dinner on a Friday evening the consumers gather in the dining area. Sit at the table so everyone has enough room and is comfortable. Encourage a social environment serve snacks or coffee. If you wish turn on the radio softly.

Step 3: The cards need to be shuffled. The dealer gives everyone seven cards. For the consumers who need extra assistance ask them to place their cards face up on the table. The game encourages color and number recognition. The remaining cards are placed face down in the tray one card is turned up in the second pile to start game play.

The game begins to the person sitting on the left of the dealer. The cards have numbers or symbols (skip, take two and reverse) and are one of four different colors. There is also a wild card. You may start out with the number/symbol matching first if desired and as everyone becomes familiar with the game add the alternate of matching colors as well.

Each person discards a card that matches the color, number or symbol. If the person does not have a card that matches they may use the wild card. If the person has no wild card they must pick up another card from the pile of face down pile. The object is to be able to discard all your cards by matching them.

When you have one card left in your hand, you need to shout UNO. If you forget to shout UNO you will have to pick up two cards. The person who has no cards remaining in their hand is the winner.. Everyone gives you his or her remaining cards. The cards are added up by points. The first person to have 500 points wins for the evening.

Step 4: Enjoy the evening. Remember it’s not important who wins. Just have a good time with your friends and family.
