FUN TO DO
Earth Day Activities
AMBOY RESIDENCE
Earth Day is April 22nd each year, and marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, proposed that the first nationwide environmental protest be held to make people aware of environmental issues. The event was a success, and drew 20 million Americans to massive coast-to-coast rallies. In 1990, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries. People look forward to Earth Day each year, and participate in activities like planting trees, promoting recycling, and educating students about the mountains, rivers, oceans, and rainforests – all of Earth’s beauties.
The Amboy Residence decided to celebrate Earth Day this year by learning more ways that they can make a positive impact on their world. They hope that you will be able to follow their example, and pass this information along to all of your family and friends. Happy Earth Day!

Idea #1: Turn off all lights when they are not needed. Unplug items such as cell phone chargers, TV’s, and DVD players. They actually continue to use energy even if they are turned off, however, it is not as much.
|
| |
Idea #2: Use a re-usable lunch bag to cut back on the amount of garbage you produce. When you use items that are reusable, you are contributing to less waste in the environment. It’s best to not use plastic bags, since these are hazardous to wild animals. They also break down into particles that are harmful to the earth.

Idea #3: Recycle all of your bottles, cans, cardboard, and paper. It takes many years for products that are not bio-degradeable to break down. It is very important to recycle so that items such as aluminum, plastic, and cardboard can be reused. It is important to separate the recycling items from the regular garbage. You can also bring your bottles and cans to a local bottle deposit area, where you will get 5 cents for every item that you deposit.

Idea #4: Conserve water. It is important to turn off the water when you are done using it. It is also important to turn off the water when you are brushing your teeth, as many gallons of water will be wasted if you don’t.

Idea #5: Throw unwanted items in the garbage. Litter can harm the environment. It is unsightly and uncollected litter can attract more. Animals may get trapped or poisoned with litter in their habitats. Litter can end up in rivers and canals, polluting the water supply.
