FUN TO DO

Making a Scarf
Senior Network Day Habilitation

Wintertime is that time of year when we need to bundle up with sweaters, coats, hats, gloves, and scarves. The Senior Network Day Habilitation sewing class decided to make winter scarves to stay warm. This activity is practical, as well as fun and challenging!

Supplies Needed:

Knitting Spool (large 4-prong peg or 6-prong peg)
Spool Needle
Yarn (1 or 2 skeins)
Grid Needle
Scissors
Tape Measure

Step 1: At your local craft or knitting supply store, choose which spool you would like to use. The Seniors chose to work with a large peg spool. Also, you will want to purchase your spool needle, grid needle, scissors, and tape measure. If you have the scissors and tape measure at home, then you are already ahead!

Step 2: Now you are ready to select which color yarn for your scarf. Winter White and white fun fur were the two types selected by the group.

Step 3: Once you have purchased all of your items and have selected a good place to work on your scarf, take the packaging off of the two skeins of yarn. Tie the two yarns together and put it through the spool in order to begin.

Step 4: Spool the line to double the measurement of the individual strand. When the desired length is reached, tie it at the end.

Step 5: Repeat this step of spooling and tying for the second line of yarn.

Step 6: Thread your grid needle with one of your colors of yarn. The Seniors chose to use the white yarn for this step.

Step 7: Sew the end pieces together and make sure that they lay flat. Then sew together the two pieces.

Step 8: When the line is sewed together, open and place the sewed edges to the middle of the neck line so that the edges are even and rounded.

Step 9: Sew these two pieces together. Now repeat step 8 so that four lines are completed.

Step 10: Continue knitting until you have reached a good length for your scarf. Now you are ready to “cast off” in order to finish your scarf.

Step 11: Take a loop off of one peg of the spool and hook it onto the next one, above the loop that is there. Move in the opposite direction that you have been working in.

Step 12: Take the bottom loop off and over the peg. Then take the remaining loop ahead to the next empty peg. Take the loop off of the next peg and place it above the current peg.

Step 13: Keep following steps 11 and 12 until one loop remains next to the tail.

Step 14: Draw the tail through your last loop and take the loop off of the peg. Cut the scarf off of your yarn. Now you have a great new scarf to keep you warm until Spring.

The members of the Senior Network are glad to share their skills with their friends. If anyone has any questions about learning how to spool knit, they would be happy to help and give lessons! You can contact the Development Department at (718) 987-1234 for more information.
