Now that March is here, it’s time to think about how we can CELEBRATE SPRING!

At Senior Network, one way we have learned how to accept being indoors due to the cold weather is to start planning for Spring. Spring is the time for new beginnings, both in nature and in our personal lives. By the time this year’s snow melts and green leaves grow back on the trees, we hope to have a collection of fully-grown plants.

In our gardening room, we began setting up small flowerpots. Each will sit at the windowsill for the next two months. As long as the blinds are open and the sun is shining, the plants will get all the light that they need.

Our horticulture class picked out four sets of vegetables – beans, corn, radishes, and onions. They then picked out soil that was rich with the nutrients that the plants would need to grow. Once they filled each of the pots near to the top, they dug small holes in the middle of the dirt. The hole was a few inches deep. Each of the class members planted a vegetable.

They then covered the seeds with the dirt that they had dug out. After pouring in just enough water to soak the dirt, they placed the plants on the windowsill. For the next two months, members of the class will come here to water the plants once or twice a week. It is important not to pour too much water into each pot. If this happens, it will move the seeds around in the soil and they won’t be able to grow.

Another way to prepare for Spring is to put away Winter clothes and break out the short sleeve shirts and jeans. Most people do this at home while doing their annual Spring cleaning. At Senior Network, our special needs class is helping to pack away the sweaters and jackets that we will no longer need in the upcoming months.

By folding up old clothes and placing them in boxes that are to be put in closets, you can reduce clutter at home and at program. This is just another step for setting up a fresh start this Spring.
