“CARING FOR A PET”

If you are thinking of getting a pet for your home there are several things you need to find out first. You can go to the local pet store or library to get information on the type of pet you would like. A bookstore would have many books on house pets and how to care for them. Remember, there are several types of pets that would make great house pets and some require more care than others. Get as much information as possible before choosing your pet. Consider the costs of food, the time to clean and groom a pet, and the veterinarian costs. If you have a friend or family member who has a pet you should talk to them and visit with the pet to fully understand the responsibility you are about to take on. Please be certain you can care for and afford a pet before bringing it home.

The Hylan Residence has a pet rabbit named “Jimmy”. Jimmy requires constant care from the people who reside in the Hylan Residence. Jimmy has to be fed and given fresh water on a daily basis. Jimmy requires a lot of attention, but in return he offers companionship, affection and a friendly atmosphere for the 12 people living at the Hylan Residence. Jimmy has truly become a welcome addition to the household!

CARING FOR A PET RABBIT

Supplies and Items Needed:
Rabbit Bedding
Rabbit Food
Water
Water Bottle
Food Dish
Carrots
Rabbit Cage
Garbage Bags

Step 1: Some supplies you will need to purchase only one time, like the rabbit cage, rabbit dish, and water bottle. Other supplies, like food, are needed on a regular basis. Check your supplies on a weekly basis. If you are out of something or running low, you need to go to the pet store or supermarket. Make a list of items needed and the amount of money you need to make your purchases.

Step 2: You need to feed the rabbit once a day. Pick a time that is easy for you and gives you enough time to do the job right. Try to feed the rabbit at the same time every day. Before you begin, gather all the items needed. Open the cage and remove the food dish and water bottle. Empty any leftover food and wash the food dish. Fill the food dish with fresh food. Open the water bottle and rinse the inside, emptying out the “old” water. Fill the water bottle with fresh cold water. Close the water bottle. Place the food dish and water bottle back in the cage. Remember to lock the cage so the rabbit does not get out when you are not there. Remember to wash your hands after handling the rabbit.

House pets can be a very fulfilling part of your life, but remember all pets need care and companionship just like people. During the day pet your rabbit and give the rabbit attention and good care. If cared for properly, pets can be a wonderful and enjoyable part of your life for many years.
