“SUNDAY BRUNCH FOR NON-COOKS”
Presented by the Great Kills Center

Have you ever thought about making a Sunday brunch for family or friends, even though you are not an experienced cook? This kind of activity should be an occasion to enjoy both breakfast and lunch items that take little time to prepare. Your brunch can be effortless, and yet a success, by following a few helpful hints.

Begin by knowing the number of people you are feeding, so you will know how many to buy for. This will also ensure you have enough seating for the brunch participants.

Next, make a list of the food and drinks to be served. Keep in mind that since you are not a cook, food preparation should be simple and easy.

Make sure that both hot and cold drinks are offered. Most commonly served are coffee, tea and fruit juices. You may also include lemonade or iced tea during warmer months and hot cocoa or cappuccino at colder times.Another popular brunch beverage is a mimosa, a mixture of orange juice and champagne.

The hot and cold theme should also be used with the food you serve. Cold items to be served can include cereal, yogurt and various fruits. Cold cuts are also frequently put out on a brunch table. Pastries like danish and muffins can also be offered.

The breads used at a brunch are important, and usually complete the meal. These include, but are not limited to, bagels, croissants, toast, and rolls. These can be eaten as they are, warmed, toasted or grilled. Butter, jellies, cream cheese and lox can be offered with breads.

The hot items recommended for non-cooks to make at a Sunday brunch include hot cereal such as oatmeal or grits, frozen waffles, pancakes and French toast. These can be ready in minutes using the microwave or toaster. For something more appealing, add fresh fruit as a garnish to any of the above.

Keep in mind that anyone can prepare a palate-pleasing Sunday brunch, even those of us who are not skilled cooks. Just remember to keep it simple, not fancy. Sometimes just following the instructions on the box can create a real masterpiece.
