“Potato Pancakes for Hanukkah
—Brought to you by the Hylan Residence

The consumers at the Hylan Residence enjoy celebrating Hanukkah thanks to one of their housemates, Fred Bogitch, who is of the Jewish faith. Mr. Bogitch enjoys sharing his cultural heritage and is extremely knowledgeable about the Jewish religion and traditions, including holiday foods. Mr. Bogitch requested to make potato pancakes—a traditional food for Hanukkah.

Ask a family member or friend to cook with you. It is safer and more enjoyable. Remember kitchen safety comes first. If you are uncomfortable using kitchen applicanes or equipment ask for help. Read the lesson plan entirely before beginning. This will insure you have all the necessary items.

INGREDIENTS/MATERIALS:
Potato Pancake Mix
Medium Bowl
Spatula
2 Eggs
Fork
2 Cups Cold Water
Measuring Cup
Vegetable Oil
Large Skillet
Measuring Spoon
Potholders

Step 1: Make a list of ingredients needed a couple of days before you would like to cook the potato pancakes. If you need any ingredients for completing the pancakes, plan a trip to the supermarket. Decide the amount of money you need. Ten dollars is more than enough for all the ingredients needed.

Step 2: Before starting any food preparation, always wash your hands thoroughly. Use warm water and soap. If you are preparing food for a large group you may wish to wear food handler’s gloves. Gather all the necessary ingredients and materials.

Step 3: In the medium mixing bowl break open two eggs. Use a fork to beat the eggs until the yolks and white are mixed together. Add 2 cups cold water. Add the potato pancake mix and thoroughly blend all the ingredients together. Let the batter stand for 3 – 4 minutes, then mix it once more.

Step 4: Remember safety comes first. If you are uncomfortable using the stove, ask your friend or a family member to assist you in cooking the pancakes. Place the large skillet on the stove. Turn the burner low. Measure 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil into the skillet. Use a potholder when touching the handle of the skillet to avoid burns. Scoop one tablespoon of batter into the skillet. Let the pancake cook for about a minute. When you see bubbles rising on top of the pancake turn it over with the spatula. It should be golden brown. Let it cook for an additional minute then remove the pancake from the skillet.

Repeat the process until all the pancakes are complete. Turn the flame off and place skillet on back burner to let cool before washing the pan.

Serve warm with applesauce on the side and enjoy.

Mr. Bogitch reminded us that although potato pancakes are served as part of a traditional Hanukkah meal, they can be served as a side dish any time. So the next time you want a change of pace from mashed potatoes, baked potatoes or rice, get out your potato pancake recipe!
