Talk: Nov Update 2005
In
We would like to re-visit our discussion regarding Moving
Out: How Do You Know When Its Time?
So
. have you asked yourself how does your family member
with a disability feel about moving out of the family home?
In order to talk about this topic you must be comfortable talking
about the letting go process and how each one of us may experience
that process differently. Some may experience feelings of fear,
feelings of guilt, feelings of loss as well as many others too
lengthy to mention here.
In order to be ready for the challenges, please consider the
following:
1. Remember that you will always be the family of your developmentally
disabled child, your role may just take on added meaning.
2. Remember that no 2 families are exactly alike and that your
feelings may be based on your son/daughters life stage.
3. You can expect to experience a wide range of feelings.
4. You need to ask yourself Am I satisfied with information
I have reviewed to this point?
5. As well keep in mind that if you attempt as best as possible
to be positive, your positive outlook will impact on how your
developmentally disabled family member experiences this decision.
Most importantly remember that it is okay to feel however it is
that you feel about this decision and trust that only you know
your family member the best and that you are making or will make
in the future whatever decision is best for your family.
Feel free to forward your thoughts about the process of your relatives
first steps toward a more independent life. Send
your thoughts and ideas to:
